River restoration is currently at the forefront of applied hydrologic science. However, many river restoration projects are conducted with minimal scientific context. We define river restoration as assisting the recovery of ecological integrity in a degraded watershed system by reestablishing hydrologic, geomorphic, and ecological processes, and replacing lost, damaged, or compromised biological elements. Major scientific advances are needed for applying existing knowledge of river ecosystem processes to restoration, and hydrologic scientists are central to the development of those advances. A presentation by Ellen Wohl from the University of Arizona.
