In the semi-arid Alai Valley of Kyrgyztan, land and water are in short supply. Communities here lack the resources to risk experimenting with various crops, and therefore stick to growing potatoes, an unprofitable but safe bet. This video highlights the story of an innovative farmer-couple who ventured to grow higher-value crops like ginger, garlic, onions and tomatoes. Doing so, they were able to improve their income considerably. The technical assistance they received from the PALM project was invaluable. It is worth considering whether similar interventions in other parts of the world would be equally beneficial to farming communities there.
