Earthen Diversion Bunds & Spillways in Spate Irrigation | Related |
|
Spate irrigation is the art and science of managing floods for irrigation. It is unique to arid and semi-arid environments, found in the Middle East, North Africa, West Asia, East Africa and parts of Latin America. In Pakistan, spate irrigation systems are usually set up at the foothills of mountains. These systems are fed water by runoff from the rivers coming down the slopes. When the runoff is excessive, earthen diversion structures that make up these systems are prone to damage. In this presentation, Noman Sadozai, Senior Engineer at Pakistan Agricultural Research Council, takes us through a recent project that could successfully restore such structures and protect them from future damage, in Dera Ismail Khan. He explains what kind of engineering inputs and social mobilization have to go into such an effort.
