The secluded communities in the -Alai mountains in Kyrgyztan and the adjacent Pamir ranges in Tajikistan are unique in their bio-diversity. Equally unique are their land/ water systems and the issues their farmers are faced with.

Abundant surface water flows through the semi-arid landscape, but the irrigation infrastructure transporting it to fields old dates back to the Soviet-era and is in urgent need of repair. Large parts of the landscape are hilly and agricultural land is limited, therefore people have taken to cultivating hillsides. This makes the soil very susceptible to water and wind erosion, and has led to decreasing land productivity over the years.

This video documents findings of the PALM project, which aims to restore, sustain, and enhance the productive and protective functions of the trans-boundary ecosystems of the High Pamir and Pamir-Alai Mountains. It also shows how experts from the project have been able to work with farmers in the region and bring about some positive changes to their productivity and livelihoods.
