When European colonial powers left Rwanda, the country was left with a society in strife and in many divisions. This led to the darkest period of Rwandan history- the genocide of 1994.

A new generation of Rwandans now seeks to put that part of the past behind them.  One of the fastest growing economies in the world, the country is now developing its institutional base and legal frameworks. Among other things, this forward looking vision translates into building mechanisms at every level of governance to address the challenges of climate change. On that front, the young nation state holds many lessons for the rest of the world.
