Flood Damages Kariba Dam (1958)

News fragment from 1958

The Kariba Hydro Electric scheme is threatened by the flood swirling waters of the Zambezia River. Unless the concrete structure holds against the increasing pressure of the rising waters, months of delay will add to the reconstruction costs. The engineers can do nothing but wait and hope for the best. The circular dam was built in midstream and then drain the water, so that the foundations of the permanent dam could be made on the river bed. Now the river is breaching the concrete walls.
