Safe Water in Sri Lanka

UNICEF, along with the European Community Humanitarian Aid Department, and other partners, is providing safe drinking water and proper latrines for children at relief camps and temporary schools and shelters around Sri Lanka. Because of the early focus on providing clean water, adequate sanitation, basic nutrition and routine medical care, not a single child in Sri Lanka has died as a result of disease or displacement from the tsunami.

Recharge well - Rainwater harvesting for aquifer

Recharge wells can pick storm water and send it to the aquifer. This can mitigate urban flooding, enhance ground water levels and make available well water for supplemental purpose. Depending on lithology conditions , ground water levels and recharge rates, these recharge wells need to be designed. In Bangalore a 3 feet diameter and 20 feet deep well works in most places and can cover 250 square metre of plot area including roof area well.

Philippines Environment Monitor: Water Quality

Poor water quality has large economic and quality of life costs, in terms of health impacts and foregone revenues. According to the Philippine government's monitoring data, just over 36 percent of the country's river systems are classified as sources of public water supply and that up to 58 percent of groundwater sampled is contaminated with coliform and needs treatment. Approximately 31 percent of illnesses monitored for a five-year period were also caused by water-borne sources, and many areas are experiencing a shortage of water supply, during the dry season.

Only one in ten households in Burkina Faso has an appropriate latrine. Sources of drinking water are jeopardised by wastewater, and there is often not enough safe water for personal hygiene. These conditions often lead to the spread of disease. The Ythan Project - sustainable land management

Access to clean water has made life safer for Monica and other Masai and Mangati women in Tanzania?s Dodoma and Kondoa districts. Lake Mikri Prespa is part of the Prespa National Park and of the transboundary Balkan Prespa Park set up in 2000 by Albania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Greece. The lake has been classified as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention and has been designated as a special protection area under the EU Birds Directive. The region boasts the world's largest breeding colony of Dalmatian Pelicans and the EU's biggest colony of Pygmy Cormorants. However, poor management of the lake water level, which outflows into Lake Megali Prespa, and the lack of vegetation management (reedbeds) have significantly degraded the birds' nesting and feeding grounds, as the surface of wet meadows has been reduced. Groundwater in deep hardrock fissures

This camera work is thanks to Mr P. Ganesh of Ayyappa Aqua Solutions . Here we see how fissures in hard rock discharge water into a bore-hole. Typically fissures are observed between 80 to 400 feet in this hard rock terrain. Yields of water are very less ranging from 1000 litres to 6000 litres per hour. Bore wells being in semi-arid parts of India, annual rainfall is also low ranging from 300 to 800 mm. Soil moisture is in deficit for 10 out of 12 months and approximately only 5 to 8% of rainfall migrates below 1 metre. Artificial recharge is one way to tackle the situation and increase groundwater. Managing and understanding available groundwater is crucial to India water security and future. We have seen such boreholes absorbing between 2000 to 15000 litres per hour. Rooftop rainwater can be lead after filteration to these boreholes to recharge aquifers.

Ecosanitation system in Bangalore, India

Sustainable sanitation is the holy grail that is being chased in both developed and developing world. Ecosan, ecological sanitation, is a system where usually source separation of urine and faeces is done. These are then hygienically treated and reused for their nutrient value Ecosan toilet in an urban area and that too on a first floor.The source separating pan ensures that urine and faeces is collected separately. The system has been designed for the Indian condition, squatters (not sitters) and washers (not wipers). A rainwater collection system collects rain from the roof into a barrel. The water for ablution purpose comes entirely from rain. A Tippy Tap dispenses water in small doses for cleansing. The urine itself is used as a fertilizer for plants and the faeces composted for application to soil. The Ecosan system is a water conserving,resource generating and pollution preventing system, good for urban areas and rural places especially. The challenge in urban areas is to find the space to utilize the nutrients. A roof garden is the perfect answer.

Farm ponds, water harvesting structures in dryland

Semi-arid lands have typically rainfall between 300 mm to 750 mm. Rainfall is sporadic and usually less than 30 rainy days. When a downpour occurs which is more than 30 mm surface runoff needs to be captured. This can then be used as supplementary irrigation when rainfall fails to occur over more than 7 to 10 days and the crops need lifeline water. By incorporating a rabbit hutch and a chicken coop, the droppings are used to rear fish in the farm pond. The water too has richer nutrients for the land when applied - truly fertigation. This is being demonstrated in the GKVK-University of Agricultural Sciences campus in Bangalore, India.

This video describes the consequence of human activities on groundwater systems.
First, the case of the decline of the Aral Sea is explained; two rivers draining the Aral Sea were diverted to irrigate farmland. Grain and cotton were produced to secure food availabilty and to provide economic stimulance to the area. Eventually the Aral Sea was left dry.
In the Netherlands the Dutch drained the low lying peatlands to increase their farmland area. Negative impacts of this drainage are descibed in the video: land subsidence, continous pumping, and seawater intrusion. Ensuring groundwater sustainability is important, especially now the world population is growing. The video ends with a few steps which could optimize groundwater management: managing groundwater instead of over exploitation, improving knowledge and understanding of regional groundwater systems, policies, lesiglation, action plans, ongoing monitoring and evaluation.

In Romania, small children still die from blue baby syndrome, caused by high levels of nitrates and human feacal bacteria in well water. These pollutants infiltrate into the groundwater from the pit latrines. Many inhabitants in Garla Mare and Prislop have difficulties feeding their families. In years of bad harvests they do not have enough to eat and sanitation is understandably not a priority for them, especially if the only available alternative is expensive.
In the village of Sulitsa in�Bulgaria, there is no central sewage. The people in the village use septic pits from where the toilet water infiltrates into the soil. WECF and its Bulgarian member "Earth Forever" built safe dry urine separating toilet and waste water facilities for schools and the cultural club and 2 households in these villages. This new technology is low cost and allows toilets to be built indoors with safe treatment of the feacal and waste water.

Development organization AMMAN IMMAN: WATER IS LIFE builds permanent sources of water in the Azawak of West Africa. The Azawak, home to half a million people, suffers from water scarcity. During the rainy season, which lasts only between one and three months, people drink from marshes. When these dry up, they have to travel long distances to find water.
People are dying, not just from drinking dirty water, but because they have no water to drink.
This film tells the story of the people of the Azawak, depicting their struggle to obtain water. The film shows how their quality of life depends of the mercy of the environment; whether they live or die depends on the rain. With a shorter and shorter rainy season, finding water becomes more and more difficult. More and more people are dying.
This is a story that development organization Amman Imman: Water is Life intends to change by constructing water sources that meet the people's basic needs.

Water for Future

This video touches upon a wide variety of topics related to water. It starts with a description of the history of our planet focussing on the important role of water. It describes the function of water within human bodies, but also explains the hydrological circle. Natural disasters like floods and droughts are briefly discussed before going into daily consumption in Lithuania and its distribution to household level. Treatment plants are discussed more in detail. After learning about pollution of the Baltic sea the video describes pollution of groundwater which is much less visible. Urbanization, industrulization are the main causes for pollution. It is time to change our attitude towards the use and protection towards water for future generations.

Infiltration capacity permeable pavement

ECOSAN - Sustainable Sanitation

Mythri Sarva Seva Samithi, Gram Panchayat, WASTE and the farmers have implemented 9 UDDT toilets in Nagasandra village in the year 2008 . On the 1st of September, 2009 the first composting/dessicating chamber was opened in the presence of the village leaders and farmers. The compost had no smell was excellently composted/dessicated and has been picked up for pathogen and nutrient analysis. In the same village the Arghyam- GKVK Centre of Excellence on productive sanitation runs a farmers field trial. The latest experiment has been on Ash gourd and this too has shown excellent results with human urine application in 3 split doses. Productive sanitation has a bright future if executed properly.

Unlike the first CoDel which studied peripheral barriers (floodgates), the goal of the Second CoDel was to see how the Dutch live with - and manage - water in urban settings.

Pangra

This video shows the story of the village Pangra in Beed and Sampat Misal, where inhabitants travel at least 25 kilometres to avail of any medical, educational or civic facility.
In 2001 the neighbouring village started a water shed program. After observing the positive impacts of this program on the other village, Pangra villagers decided to adopt a watershed program as well. This video shows the�process of the water shed program. Gramsabha (common village meeting) plays an important role during this program as important rules can be set during these meetings (e.g. a ban on free grazing).

Porous Pavements: StormwaterPA

Pervious pavement / porous pavement consists of a permeable surface course underlain by a uniformly-graded stone bed. Stormwater drains through the surface, is temporarily held in the voids of the stone bed, and then slowly drains into the underlying, uncompacted soil mantle. The Morris Arboretum, in Philadelphia, PA, has successfully integrated this BMP into its parking areas to control rainwater runoff and help improve water quality in the local creek.

Community-led Total Sanitation in Bangladesh

Through what is now known as the CLTS approach, it is explained to communities defecating in the open that they end up eating each others sh*t! The resulting shock/shame results in the communities demanding for/adopting more hygienic sanitation practices. In 2004, Plan introduced CLTS in over 200 villages in the Dinajpur District of Bangladesh. �By 2007, all villages in Plan's target area had eliminated open defecation and the entire population has access to hygienic latrines.

In this presentation, Dabelko describes how water quality and quantity are declining in many parts of the world, posing acute problems for communities and governments. This crisis, along with high levels of interdependence on shared water resources, has led many members of the news media and some politicians to warn of imminent "water wars" between countries. Yet such wars between nations over water have never occurred in modern history and are unlikely to take place in the future. In the arid farmlands of eastern Kenya, a German NGO has been helping communities to harvest rain. Using the occasional rock features that interrupt the otherwise flat landscape, they are building simple reservoirs to catch rainwater as it runs down the rock face. The collected water is then sold for a token price. Some communities have invested in the stock market, others in drip irrigation - raising the real possibility that what started out as a survival technique may yet turn into a development tool.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Botanic Garden produced this 9-minute on-line video: Reduce Runoff: Slow It Down, Spread It Out, Soak It In, that highlights green techniques such as rain gardens, green roofs and rain barrels to help manage stormwater runoff. The film showcases green techniques that are being used in urban areas to reduce the effects of stormwater runoff on the quality of downstream receiving waters. The goal is to mimic the natural way water moves through an area before development by using design techniques that infiltrate, evaporate, and reuse runoff close to its source. The techniques are innovative stormwater management practices that manage urban stormwater runoff at its source, and are very effective at reducing the volume of stormwater runoff and capturing harmful pollutants. Using vegetated areas that capture runoff also improves air quality, mitigates the effects of urban heat islands and reduces a community's overall carbon footprint.

CSIR Getting to grips with groundwater

The CSIR studied the Cape's Table Mountain Group aquifer in an attempt to understand how it supports rivers and wetlands in the fynbos biome. The research confirmed that the ecological role of the aquifer is critical in terms of maintaining hydrodiversity in the fynbos. The research also helped the City Council of Cape Town understand the feasibility of using the resource for bulk water supply.

Based on the last available statistics, Africa accounts for a staggering 99% of the global total of cholera-related deaths. And still, the burden of the disease is grossly underestimated. Most research in Africa has so far been incident based with no concerted effort towards long term suveillance in any of the cholera prone areas.

To fill this gap, a multidisciplinary team from the CSIR emarked on a three-year project on the coastal and fresh water sources around the Mozambican city of Beira.

Brackish water purified with nanotechnology

Researchers are developing indicators that will tell the story of the area's current health, enabling them to predict future changes. In the mountains of northern Costa Rica, communities who had long thought of water as an inexhaustible resource have begun to see a reduction in quality and quantity of this vital liquid. The cloud forests have been continually destroyed to make room for farm land and urban growth. However, through the reforestation of lands surround their water sources, ecological loans to reclaim their watershed and the involvement of all members of the community, the people of R�o La Balsa are fighting to protect a quality of life they have enjoyed for generations. While these communities once only worried about the quality of their pipes and tanks, they are now all aware that the quality of the water itself can not be taken for granted. To ensure potable water for all, it will require much more than just a tube.

As well as providing some beautiful scenery, the rivers that run through – and on the edge of – Britain’s towns and cities supply us with most of our freshwater, for drinking and washing, and take away our waste.
It can sometimes be hard to see the connection between the water that comes out of our taps and the water we see flowing along in streams and rivers.
But the fact is, the water you rely on at home will originally have been pumped from rivers (or underground aquifers that supply rivers), before being stored in reservoirs and processed at treatment plants.
Even in traditionally rainy Britain, the consequences of our wasteful overuse of water, particularly in heavily-populated areas, are now becoming clear to see.

The De Hoop dam is being constructed at a cost of R 5 billion in one of the poorest areas of rural South Africa. The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry hopes to stimulate investment of R 15 billion and create opportunities for some 90 000 jobs.
This project aims to provide the necessary water resource infrastructure in the form of a storage dam, and a 300 km network of water pipelines, reservoirs and pump stations. CSIR scientists are investigating how the dam can promote development and growth in the area.

The extinction rate of species in freshwater ecologies is estimated to be almost five times higher than those on land.
A project led by�the South African National Biodiversity Institute and managed by the CSIR aims to identify a national network of freshwater conservation areas.
The research will focus on large river ecosystems as well as wetlands, estuaries and groundwater. When this research is completed, South Africa will have a national map of exact priorities for fresh water biodiversity.

Peaty areas and wetlands play a very important role in maintaining biodiversity, regulating the soil’s water regime, providing habitats for animals and enhancing an area’s landscape value. On the Saint-Hubert Plateau many of these habitats have been greatly altered by the digging of drainage networks that were required for forestry (primarily spruce plantations) but upset the water regime on which peat bogs depend. The disturbance and draining of these fragile soils facilitated the subsequent spread of a particularly invasive plant species, purple moor grass.
So, the LIFE-Tourbi�res (peatlands) Project aims to restore these sites, which are scattered around the plateau, by felling the spruce trees and grinding up stumps, filling the drains, flooding certain areas and turning sheep out on other areas to control the spread of purple moor grass better.

Nicholas Hakata, a local youth leader and community representative, explains that he and his family have been surviving on mainly fish and coconuts, and battling the swamp mosquitoes that have brought malaria. With the local government's food aid ship coming once or twice a year, the relocation plans are equally as slow. Hungry and unwell, the islanders have set up a relocation team and have begun a series of urgent tasks to move families closer to security. Kijigari is a village in the Azawak of Niger, West Africa where a strong community has developed, in spite of the dire conditions caused by the lack of accessible water. In March, 2009, the Amman Imman team visited Kijigari to find out more about their water problems and assess whether or not the people want a borehole. In Kijigari they found a school, a community garden managed by women, and a sewing cooperative. But when the marsh runs dry, everyone abandons Kijigari to find water. What the people of Kijigari need to continue their progress is water. In February, 2010, Amman Imman returned to Kijigari and drilled a borehole, 180 meters deep. The borehole will be equipped with pump and engine, water tower, faucets and animal troughs with an expected completion by the end of March. Having water will not only save lives but it will also rebuild the villages economy: among other things, the women will be able to plant flourishing gardens, the children will attend school year-round, and the men will rebuild their livestock herds. The borehole will be named the Kijigari Montessori Well of Love, in honor of students around the world who have been helping bring water to the Azawak. It will be dedicated to the late Dennis Hamilton. The site of Amman Imman's borehole in the village of Tangarwashane has become an oasis of life. Once dry and barren, with nothing more than the tents of nomads who had lost their animals due to the ever lengthening drought, Tangarwashane now has a school, a food program, a reforestation project and adult education classes. Health, education and income is beginning to flourish. None of these opportunities would have been possible without the provision of water, now adequately supplied by the Amman Imman's borehole. This is Amman Imman's vision, that these permanent water structures be the catalyst for an Oasis of Life. And so it has come to be in Tangarwashane. Many more boreholes are needed to meet the needs of half a million people. You can help build more Oases of Life in the Azawak of West Africa.

Too much of the world lacks access to clean drinking water. Engineer Michael Pritchard did something about it -- inventing the portable Lifesaver filter, which can make the most revolting water drinkable in seconds. An amazing demo from TEDGlobal 2009.
Using a non-chemical nano-filtration hollow fiber membrane with 15 nanometer pores (it is designed to block viruses), the Lifesaver bottle can make the most revolting swamp water drinkable in seconds. Better still, a single long-lasting filter can clean 6,000 liters of water. Given the astronomical cost of shipping water to disaster areas, Pritchard\'s Lifesaver bottle could turn traditional aid models on their heads.
