High potential of natural resources but low agricultural productivity are main characteristics of Gezira Irrigation Scheme in Sudan. Located in the central part of the Blue Nile Basin, it is the biggest gravity irrigation scheme under one management in the world, counting an area of almost 900,000 hectare. Fertile soils and sufficient water resources were the reason for its establishment more than 90 years ago. But today the scheme’s efficiency is low due to a deteriorated infrastructure and institutional and financial limitations. Strong efforts are needed to revive the food basket of Gezira in Sudan.

The film “Gezira Irrigation Scheme – A Struggle for Revival” was produced by the Institute for Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ITT) and financed by 'Centers of Natural Resources and Development' (CNRD). After the film “Agricultural Challenges in the Ethiopian Highlands”, which was produced in 2013 and focused on the upstream part of the Blue Nile Basin, this educational film presents the second IWRM case study film on one of the major river basins of the world.
